"DYNAMICS"

“He has great dynamics…"

Why are “dynamics” only ever referring to the ability to play softer and softer? Almost all of the drummers today who have great “dynamics” can’t play loud/powerfully and often times, when they try to, they bash = no sound comes out of the instrument.

The sound doesn’t travel. It’s like they’re playing on mute - even though they’re hitting the drums very hard, you can’t hear anything that’s being played, but the perceived intensity in how it looks is enough to make people believe that they’re really playing.

When you learn to use your hands, to hit the drums, to activate the shells and send the sound out as far and as fully as it can go, you will understand that this has very little to do with volume. It’s a posture of intentionality.
